Spanish Sangria

Sangria is definitely a classic and refreshing summer drink. When I was hanging out with my dig friends in Zorita de los Canes in Spain we often made and drank sangria on our inn’s rooftop in the evenings after a hot day’s work. Below I thought I would include a classic Spanish (red or white) sangria recipe which is easy to make and tastes amazing!

Prep time: 10-15 minutes

Additional time: 2 hours sitting in the fridge (the longer it sits in the fridge… the better!)

Servings: 6

Ingredient List

  • 1 Lemon
  • 2 Limes
  • 3 Oranges
  • 1 and 1/4 cups of rum of your choice
  • 1/4 white sugar
  • 1 bottle of dry red wine (e.g.: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) if making red sangria or 1 bottle of dry white wine (e.g.:Pino Grigio or Sauvignon blanc) if making white sangria.
  • Additional fruit of your choice sliced (e.g.: peach, nectarines, mango) or berries (blueberries, strawberries).

What else you will need:

  • Pitcher
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Large wooden spoon


  1. Slice lemon, one lime and one orange into thin rounds and place into pitcher.
  2. Squeeze juice from one lime and two oranges and pour into pitcher.
  3. Add rum and white sugar (could reduce amount based on preference)
  4. Add wine of your choice and stir ingredients thoroughly.
  5. Add additional fruits of your choice.
  6. Let the pitcher sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or longer if you have the time.
